A high court in the city of Lahore this week barred Sharif from standing in Thursday's by-election, mainly on the basis of a a criminal conviction that Sharif says was politically motivated.

Pakistan's Supreme Court postponed on Wednesday a by-election in a constituency where former prime minister Nawaz Sahir had hoped to stand, pending a ruling on a decision by a lower court to bar him from the poll.

A high court in the city of Lahore this week barred Sharif from standing in Thursday's by-election, mainly on the basis of a a criminal conviction that Sharif says was politically motivated.

"The election has been stayed," Attorney General Malik Abdul Qayyum told Reuters, adding that the next hearing into the case will be on Monday.
