The Supreme Court of Pakistan Friday ordered the release of an opposition leader on bail, held in 2003 on the charges of abetting mutiny against the army.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, which included recently reinstated Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary, ordered the release of Javed Hashmi.
Hashmi was arrested in October 2003 on the charges of inciting the army to mutiny. He has been one of the most outspoken critics of President Musharraf, who seized power in a coup in 1999.
As well as heading the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD), he was the acting leader of Pakistan Muslim League (PML) associated with Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister overthrown in the coup.
