A senior religious leader was shot dead in Northwest Pakistan on Saturday, witnesses and police said.
Some unidentified gunmen opened fire on Maulana Hasan Jan, a leader of Jamiat ulema-e-Islam (JUI), when he was going to a mosque for evening prayers in Peshawar city of North West Frontier Province.
Maulana Hasan Jan was seriously injured and died on his way to hospital, while four gunmen fled in a vehicle after the attack, witnesses said.
Maulana Hasan Jan was the head of a major religious seminary in Peshawar and a former member of the National Assembly. Also as the deputy president of the alliance of religious seminary "Wafaq-ul-Madaris," he was in conflict with the government over the issue of Lal Masjid in Islamabad.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack. The police said special teams were formed to search the assailants.
