Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Benazir Bhutto and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Mian Nawaz Sharif would meet and discuss issues regarding the forthcoming general elections on Monday or Tuesday, PPP spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said Saturday.
Talking to a local private TV channel, Babar said PML-N had contacted PPP for a meeting with Bhutto, and the two opposition leaders would discuss whether or not to boycott the Jan. 8 general polls as well as the post-boycott scenario.
Sharif said on Thursday that the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM), comprising over 30 opposition parties including PML-N, had decided to boycott the general elections.
He also disclosed that a committee would be set up in a bid to persuade PPP, which is one of the biggest opposition parties in the country, to join their boycott.
Local media reported that some candidates from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Qaid (PML-Q) seemed relieved at APDM's decision to boycott the elections because they would have a bigger chance to win national assembly or provincial assemblies seats.
President Pervez Musharraf vowed to hold the general elections as scheduled and urged all political parties to participate in the elections in a televised national address on Thursday.
