Palestinian Muslim clerics have made progress in negotiating an end to the stand-off between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam in a Palestinian refugee camp near the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, an Arab news network said Monday.

The Ulema clerics are aiming to persuade the Fatah al-Islam fighters to withdrawn from the Nahr al-Bared camp, the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera reported.

Lebanese authorities are demanding that the fighters lay down their arms and surrender, and the Ulema's task is to find a compromise solution which will allow both sides to save face, the report said.

Dozens people have been killed and thousands of refugees have fled the camp since clashes between the fighters and the Lebanese army first broke out late last month.
