Palestinian groups call on Egypt to stop Gaza wall

Hamas and other Palestinian groups called on Egypt on Tuesday to stop building a steel wall along the Gaza border.

"Hamas sees the continued building of the wall as unjustified and it will bring catastrophe on the Palestinian people, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told a news conference, where the group and other factions urged Cairo to end the project.

It has been one year since Israel's attacks over Gaza. Israel launched on Dec. 27 a massive offensive in Gaza, killing nearly 1500 Palestinians, a third of them children, and wounded more than 5000. 1.5 million Gazans live under heavy Israel siege for a long time.

Egypt draws angers, insisting on not to opening the only Gaza border crossing, leaving Gazans desperate to digging tunnels underground and risking their lives since 2007.

"This will only lead to the strangulation of our residents and will bring about a real catastrophe in the Gaza Strip," he said.

Egyptian officials confirmed on Monday that Egypt is building an underground steel barrier next to its border with Gaza, where Palestinians have struggled heavy blockade.

Egyptian officials have also said steel tubes were being placed in the ground at several points along the 14-km (8-mile)-long border, but they did not specify their purpose.

No march to Gaza

Earlier Monday Cairo rejected a request by international activists to organise a march to Gaza via Egypt to mark one year since Israel's massive military offensive against Gaza.

At least 500 Hamas supporters rallied along the border on Monday to condemn the building of the wall while Egyptian soldiers were on the other side of the frontier to take up positions behind sandbags.

Hamas security forces were also deployed at the border during the protest.

16 rights groups, including Amnesty International and Oxfam, said Tuesday the international community has betrayed the people of Gaza by failing to end an Israeli blockade which is preventing reconstruction and recovery.

Israel and Egypt imposes siege into the occupied land home to 1.5 million people since June 2007.

Israel controls all but one of Gaza's border crossings, the Rafah terminal with Egypt, which Cairo keeps closed.
