Israeli newspaper reported Palestinian Attorney Walid Hamis has announced that he is running for Haifa mayor, representing the first time an Arab candidate has run for the city's top post since 1948.
Hamis, who served as Haifa's deputy mayor at the beginning of Israeli Mayor Yona Yahav's term, quit after the Second Lebanon War broke out.
Haarezt quoted Hamis as saying "Haifa's Arabs are not some candidate's vote reservoir. We want to be full partners in running the city."
Haifa's Palestinian voters have in the past voted for Labor candidates - or whoever runs against the right.
