U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said it's unrealistic to think the United States can leave the country in the near future.
In an interview with ABC from Baghdad, Petraeus said he was aware of recent polls showing as many as 60 percent of people in the United States want troops brought home.
"We are going to be engaged in Iraq for some foreseeable future," the general said. "I don't think anyone would think that we'd be completely out of here or completely unhooked from Iraq."
Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq David Crocker are to report to Congress in September on the situation in Iraq. Petraeus told ABC he no longer felt as optimistic as he was in 2004 and would put the learning experience into the report.
"I'm not an optimist or a pessimist, I'm a realist," he said.
