PM-designated Berisha presents cabinet to Albanian President

PM-designated Sali Berisha on Wednesday presented his cabinet to Albanian President Bamir Topi just after named the country's next prime minister.

Berisha formed an alliance with Socialist Integration Movement (SIM) after a regional proportional voting system used for the first time at the June 28 general election produced the closest result since the end of communism in 1990.

Albania's coalition government will fight corruption and revamp the health system as part of its reforms to bring the Balkan country closer to the European Union, the incoming prime minister said.

Having joined NATO last year, Sali Berisha's Democratic Party and its allies hope to end their second term by making Albania a member of the European Union (EU) around 2013.

"This government will make a great contribution for (Albania's) membership of the European Union," Berisha told reporters after receiving a mandate to form the government by President Bamir Topi.

"The reform against corruption ... it is the greatest enemy of the freedom of the market," Berisha said.

"We shall push the reform in the health system because we see it as a vital reform for the Albanian society," Berisha, a former heart surgeon.

However, the opposition Socialist Party has vowed to boycott parliament until an investigation is launched into the outcome of the June election.

Berisha confirmed Ridvan Bode, Sokol Olldashi and Majlinda Bregu as Finance, Transport and EU Affairs Ministers. SIM's leader Ilir Meta will be Berisha's deputy and foreign minister and his deputy Dritan Prifti will get the economy and energy portfolio.
