Poland is backing its FM to replace NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who steps down next year, PM said.
Poland is backing its Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, to replace NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who steps down next year, Prime Minister Donald Tusk was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
"I have been in consultations on this for months. It would be a great chance for Poland... In institutions like NATO, time comes for new countries," Tusk said when asked about Sikorski's candidacy.
De Hoop Scheffer, a former Dutch foreign minister, is stepping down in 2009 after four years as secretary general of the U.S.-led, 26-nation alliance.
