More than half of Romanians do not like it that their president, Traian Basescu, drinks alcohol and smokes cigarettes in public, according to a poll by published Tuesday by the Romanian IPP institute.
Some 61.6 per cent were against the president's drinking in public and 56.5 per cent against his smoking.
Despite his public habits, 65.8 per cent of those polled said they would vote for Basescu again.
The second most popular politician was Socialist opposition leader, Mircea Geoanan, with only 6.6 per cent support.
Basescu, in office since 2004, is often seen frequenting Bucharest pubs and, according to press reports, drives after drinking alcohol.
On vacations to the Black Sea coast, the 55-year-old politician typically exhibits a willingness to be photographed with tourists, with many observers attributing his popularity to such tactics as well as his frequent verbal attacks on the country's widespread corruption.
