Syria's referendum on President Bashar Al-Assad's candidacy for reelection to a new seven-year term started at early Sunday and ballot stations flooded with Syrian citizens over 18 years of age to cast their vote.

Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Elections Committee Major General Bassam Abdul-Majid said in a press statement, 11,967,000 voters would take part in the referendum.

Syria's Ministry of Information set a packed schedule for journalists to tour voting stations during the event.

A mass of eligible Syrian citizens from all walks of life gathered in front of voting stations waving their country's flag and posters of the president while uttering "yes to Bashar".

The referendum, which started at 7:00 a.m., will end at 7:00 p.m. Sunday with the possibility of extending the closing time to no later than 10:00 p.m. of the same day in case of excessive turn-out.
