Public voting for presidency re-adopted in commission
A parliamentary commission adopted Saturday a vetoed constitutional amendment package without making any changes and the General Assembly is set to debate the package on Monday.

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer returned the bill last Friday for re-debate.

The package would allow for the popular election of the president and the general elections to be held every four years and lower the presidential from the current seven years to five and the president can stand for re-election for a second term. The amendment also sets a quorum of at least one third of total number of MPs as requirement for parliamentary sessions.
