Putin promises Abbas armoured vehicles, support
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in Moscow agreed to provide the government of embattled Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas with 50 armoured vehicles and other military technology, the Russian government announced.
The equipment was to be used exclusively for the maintenance of law and order, according to the announcement.
Putin assured the Palestinian leader of Moscow's complete support for solving the Gaza Strip power dispute problems.
The Kremlin leader also said Moscow continued to seek the formation of an independent Palestinian state, a report by the Interfax agency said.
Putin said he hoped Abbas would do everything to assure the unity of the Palestinian people and said Moscow supported Abbas as the legal leader of the Palestinians.
Abbas arrived in Moscow on Sunday evening, on a visit coming amid the power struggle between his Fatah party and the Hamas group which seized control of the Gaza Strip.
Abbas said Tuesday, his last day in Moscow, that he was prepared for negotiations with Hamas on condition that Hamas apologize for takeover in the Strip.
