Railway strike halts train service across Turkey

Personnel of the Turkish railway administration staged demonstrations late on Tuesday and on Wednesday and halted train voyages throughout the country.

Personnel of the Turkish State Railways Administration (TCDD) launched a demonstration in Ankara and Istanbul on Tuesday under the auspices of their unions, saying that their 16 friends were temporarily dismissed.

This demonstration halted or delayed train voyages throughout Turkey.

"We will not work until our friends are taken back to their posts," a secretary of Istanbul branch of the United Transportation Employees' Union (BTS), said.

Also, TCDD director general Suleyman Karaman said that an investigation had been launched regarding 16 personnel who were temporarily dismissed after November 25th strike, and they could not be given back their posts until the investigation was completed.

During Tuesday's and Wednesday's demonstrations, security forces detained three people at Istanbul's Haydarpasa Train Station.

On November 25, civil servants' confederations staged one-day strike throughout Turkey and TCDD personnel also joined the strike by halting train services.
