EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn said on Friday that reunification of the divided island of Cyprus was EU's basic goal and the union was ready to provide all kinds of technical and legal support to this end.
Rehn was received by President Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in Lefkosa on Friday. No statements were delivered prior to the meeting.
Before meeting Talat, Rehn also held talks with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias.
Upon completing his talks in the Greek part of the island, Rehn proceeded to TRNC, walking through Lokmaci gate. Rehn and Turkish Cypriot officials had a walking tour around Lefkosa and they visited the EU Support Office.
Delivering a speech during the visit, Rehn said that EU desired the reunification of Cyprus as well as economic and educational development of the Turkish Cypriot community.
Rehn also said that EU supported the ongoing negotiation process in Cyprus, moreover, the union appreciated the brave and determined stances of both Cypriot leaders.
As part of his talks, Rehn got together with TRNC's Premier Ferdi Sabit Soyer as well.
EU Commissioner Rehn is expected to hold a press conference after completing his talks in TRNC.
