Reportedly, the instruction to withdraw Arafat's naturalized status comes from Tunisia's president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The Tunisian government did not state a reason for revoking the citizenship, but sources in the justice system said Arafat lost her "moral and material rights."
Arafat, who has been living with her daughter in Tunisia since the death of her husband in 2004, was naturalized in 2006. Al Hayat, another London-based Arabic daily, reported that Suha Arafat left Tunisia last month. A reason for her leaving the country was not given.
But about a year ago a Tunisian Website reported that Arafat secretly married the brother in law of President Ben Ali. It was rumored that Ben Ali's brother in law was supposed to marry Arafat's sister, but that he was "convinced" to marry her because of her immense wealth.
Arafat denied the reports of the secret marriage. In August, she told Agence France Presse "I strongly deny the reports that I married Balahsan el Trabulsi. I'll sue the media outlets that published this false report."
