Turkey's Mustafa Denizli is the favourite to take over the coaching of Iran, the Iranian Fars news agency reported Monday.
Iranian football federation officials have reportedly contacted the 57-year-old Denizli, who is said to be interested in taking the job, although there has been no confirmation from officials.
Denizli spent three years in Iran coaching Tehran clubs Pas and Persepolis before returning to Turkey in summer.
He also coached the Turkish national team at the 2000 European championships in Holland and Belgium as well as several Turkish teams, including Galatasaray.
The current national coach of Iran, Amir Qalehnoei, has come under fire after the national team performed poorly at last July's Asian Championship in Malaysia and Indonesia where the three-time champions lost to a weakened South Korean team in the quarter-finals.
