Rio de Janeiro's State Police on Monday arrested 47 of their own members for allegedly taking bribes from drug gangs.
The arrests were made in the municipality of Duque de Caxias, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, part of the so-called Baixada Fluminense region which has the highest crime rates in Rio.
They allegedly took between 2,000 reais (1,041 U.S. dollars) and 3,900 reais (1,560 U.S. dollars) a week from drug gangs, said the police. In return, they would inform gangs of police operation plans and avoid carrying out raids on them.
Investigations were also underway into their links to other crimes euch as homicide and arms and drug trafficking, police said.
