Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos will meet next month to try to advance a stalled UN initiative to rekindle talks on reunifying the divided island.

Tuesday's announcement coincided with a warning by Talat that Cyprus - which has been split along ethnic lines for more than three decades - was facing "permanent partition."

The United Nations in Nicosia said the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities have scheduled a meeting September 5 in the UN-patrolled buffer zone dividing the island.
