Romanian president picks ally Emil Boc as PM

Romanian President Traian Basescu nominated centrist ally and current acting Prime Minister Emil Boc to head a new government on Thursday, giving Boc a chance to stay in power after he lost a confidence vote in October.

Basescu said the government should be approved by Dec. 23.

Analysts say Boc has good prospects of winning backing in parliament from his Democrat-Liberal and ethnic Hungarian allies, along with that of other minority parties and independent deputies.

This would give them up to five more seats in parliament than the 236 they need in both houses in a vote of confidence.
