Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday criticised US arguments for a planned missile shield in Eastern Europe as "not persuasive" and unnecessary.
Speaking at a business forum in the Philippines after a regional summit of foreign ministers, Lavrov looked forward to a planned October meeting of US and Russian defence and foreign ministers to thrash out the issue.
Lavrov said Russian negotiators had already "presented ... open and honest analysis of threats that exist in the area of missile proliferation" to the US side.
He reiterated it was unnecessary for the United States to set up a missile defence system in Eastern Europe, saying that it was "enough to use radars in Russia and its neighbours to monitor, real-time, on-line."
Lavros said the analysis presented by Washington was "not persuasive.".
Lavrov also called for a strengthening of the United Nations and the UN Security Council to ensure global stability but made no references to disputes between Russia and Western nations like the United States and Britain.
