Russia, India to sign transport aircraft deal

Russia and India will sign a deal to start work on the design of a new transport aircraft in April, daily newspaper Kommersant reported on Thursday.

Russian state company Rosoboronexport and Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd will sign a deal next week on the design of a new transport aircraft, the newspaper reported citing a source on the Russian side.

The contract for the design of the plane is 8.5 million dollars (5.5 million euros), said Viktor Livanov, the general director of the aircraft manufacturer MAK Ilyushin, one of the companies involved in the deal, told the newspaper.

The total worth of the project is 600 million dollars with each side investing 300 million dollars each, Livanov said.

Design of the plane should take two years with the plane set to be certified for flight in 2015, Livanov told the newspaper.

India is Russia's traditional ally in southwest Asia.
