Russia police shot dead 'Emir of Dagestan': Reports

Russian police shot dead a leading suspected insurgent, known as the "Emir of Dagestan," and three other fighters in a firefight in Dagestan on Thursday, state-run news agencies reported, citing local police.

The leader Umalat Magomedov was shot dead in Khasavyurt, a town in the mainly Muslim region of Dagestan close to the border with Chechnya, police spokesman Mark Tolchinsky told Interfax news agency.

The shooting started when police tried to stop a car in which Magomedov was travelling, state-run news agency RIA said.

Russia imposed its control in Muslim states, however, still low-level insurgency continues in Muslim states controlled by Russia.

Human rights groups have repeatedly accused the authorities of serious abuses including house burning, extra-judicial killings, torture and illegal punishment.
