Russia will take no practical steps to retaliate against the planned U.S. missile defence shield unless it is physically deployed, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.
"A retaliatory step will be made in the event, and only in the event, if the ... (missile defence installations in eastern Europe) are physically created. If it is not created then there will be no retaliatory measures from the Russian Federation," Lavrov told a news conference.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said last year he would order the deployment of Iskander missiles to Russia's western outpost of Kaliningrad if the United States went ahead with its plan for a missile shield.
Russian officials have said they are encouraged by what they describe as signals from the new U.S. administration that it will not rush ahead with the missile shield plan.
