Russia has dispatched a large shipment of aid to the Palestinian territories to join international efforts in keeping the Gaza Strip from becoming a humanitarian catastrophe, the foreign ministry said.
"Two airplanes delivered the cargo to Amman. It mainly consists of food and medicine that is critically needed there," the ministry said in a statement published late Wednesday.
"The Palestinian people must not become hostage to the dangerous tensions in and around the Palestinian territories. We are sure that all interested sides will help deliver Russia's humanitarian aid to those who need it as soon as possible," the ministry added.
Russia has carved out a unique position in Middle East diplomacy by maintaining contacts both with Fatah and Hamas, the main rival Palestinian factions, and last month voiced its intention to boost aid to Palestinians.
