Russia, Serbia sign sale of NIS majority stake to Gazprom

Russia and Serbia on Wednesday signed a deal on the sale of a 51-percent stake in the Balkan country's oil monopoly NIS to Russian gas giant Gazprom.

Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev and Serbia's President Boris Tadic attented a signing ceremony in Moscow.

Tadic came to Moscow to hold talks with Medvedev on the energy agreement.

Routing of the 13-billion-dollar South Stream pipeline through Serbia, carrying Russian gas under the Black Sea to Western Europe, would secure the country supplies and transit fees.

Russia is a long-time ally of Serbia.
