Russia to write off $10 bln Afghan debt
Russia and Afghanistan on Monday signed an agreement to write off about 10 billion U.S. dollars of Afghanistan's Soviet-era debt, news agencies reported.

Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin and his Afghan counterpart Anwar Ul-Haq Ahady inked the agreement, which will cancel about 90 percent of the Afghan debt to the former Soviet Union.

The debt, totaling about 11 billion dollars, mostly originated from deliveries of Soviet-made weaponry, Interfax said.

The rest of the debt will be settled in assistant programs in the coming two or three years, Russian financial officials said.
