Russian delegation to travel to US for missile defence talks

A Russian delegation is to fly to Washington to resume talks on controversial US missile defence plans, one week after inconclusive efforts to reach a compromise by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Moscow.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak could travel to the US capital as early as Tuesday, news agency Interfax cited diplomatic sources as saying on Monday.

Russia is expected to answer US proposals put forward last week in Moscow for solutions that would assuage Russian security concerns over US plans to base elements of a missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic.

US proposals included offers to allow a Russian monitoring presence at the planned bases and to delay activating them until proof emerges of an imminent threat from "rogue" states such as Iran. The US says the system is aimed at such states and not Russia.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last week hailed what he called "an entire package of confidence-building measures" from the US side.
