Russian forces killed three people on Thursday in the southern region of Dagestan, an interior ministry spokesman said.
Special forces wearing body armour and armed with machineguns killed the three when they raided a house on the outskirts of the capital, Makhachkala, an official said on condition of anonymity. Two special forces police were wounded.
Dagestan is a mainly Muslim region of over 2.5 million people wedged between Chechnya and the Caspian Sea coast where attacks on security forces have increased over the last couple of years, a spike in violence analysts have warned could worsen.
The independent website www.kavkaz-uzel.ru said at least 49 suspected fighters were killed in Dagestan last year in 17 special operations.
