Serbia's Muslims gather to mark new year of Islamic Hijri calender.

Islamic lunar calender is called Hijri because beginning of it is the emigration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina which is known as Hijra.

Serbia's Muslim community, concentrated in the south-west Sandzak region and the city of Novi Pazar, today mark the arrival of the new year 1430, reported Balkan Insight.

The Muslim New Year begins on the first day of the month of Muharram, according to the lunar calendar, and marks the flight of the Prophet and his followers from Mecca to Medina.

Muslims consider this emigration one of the most important events in the early stages of Islam and date their era, known as the Hijri, since that time - 16 July, 622.

The Muslim New Year is not celebrated, however, but is marked with religious ceremonies, teachings from the Koran and spiritual lectures.
