In case Abdullah Gul is elected the president in the third round of voting next Tuesday, he will go to the Presidential Palace on Wednesday and formally take over the office from President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.
Upon Sezer's instruction, no hand-over ceremony will be held. Thus, Sezer will hand over the post to Gul in the office of the president instead of the ceremony hall.
According to sources, President Sezer's wife Semra Sezer will not be in the Presidential Palace when Gul goes there. And Abdullah Gul's wife Hayrunnisa Gul will go to the Presidential Palace after Sezer leaves the building.
When Suleyman Demirel handed over the office to Sezer seven years ago, a glorious ceremony was held. 1,500 people, including former president Kenan Evren, commanders, prime minister, ministers and foreign diplomats participated in that ceremony.
PM Erdogan on ceremony
Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that President Ahmet Necdet Sezer desired the handover of presidency to take place without a ceremony.
During his party's Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting, Erdogan said, "Mr.Sezer told me that he wanted to handover presidency simply and without a ceremony".
Throughout the history of republic, handover ceremonies could only take place twice due to military interventions, health problems and death.
