The number of Iraqi school children who will be enrolled in the current scholastic year in Jordanian schools will top 40,000, compared to 16,000 last year, minister of Education Khalid Touqan indicated on Sunday.

Iraqi students in this country are treated exactly as Jordanian ones and get the same opportunities, he told the state news agency PETRA.

He added that the number of Iraqi children of school age has been estimated to be about 50,000, all of whom require state allocations for their education.

A number of international refugee and humanitarian organizations have in recent times appealed to the international community to chip in a total of USD 130 million to be turned over to Jordanian authorities to defray the cost of educating Iraqi children whose families have been displaced to Jordan. Almost one and half million Jordanian students are going back to school this fall.
