Some Turkish policemen to return home early from quake-hit Haiti

Thirteen of the 52 Turkish police officers deployed at the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) will return to Turkey earlier than the end of their mission term on January 31.

13 Turkish police officers, spouses of five of them and six children will return to Turkey soon as acts of violence in the capital Port-au-Prince grew following a magnitude-7 quake devastated the country.

Officials said Tuesday that the term in office of the 13 Turkish police officers was going to end on January 31 but they would return to Turkey soon as security could not be provided in Haiti.

Officials added that Turkey would assign new police officers to Haiti.

Decision on the remaining 39 police officers would be made later, noted the officials.

A powerful earthquake devastated Haiti on January 12.

The quake killed tens of thousands of people and left thousands of others homeless and destitute. It was the most devastating quake recorded in the last two centuries.
