South Africa's general election will be held on April 22, President Kgalema Motlanthe said in a prepared speech on Tuesday.

Motlanthe said in the speech published on the presidency's website that the actual date for the poll -- in which the ruling African National Congress faces an unprecendented challenge from the new Congress of the People party -- will only be proclaimed at a later date.
