Spanish PM Zapatero in Cyprus for meetings

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose country will take over EU's rotating presidency as of January 1, said on Monday that Spain supported the ongoing talks in Cyprus.

Speaking to reporters following his meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias in Cyprus, Zapatero said that Spain, as the next rotating president of EU, encouraged and supported the ongoing negotiation process between the two nations in the island.

Zapatero also said Spain hoped that such dialogue process, which was based on a single-state solution, would continue in accordance with the principles of UN and EU.

Zapatero is expected to invite President Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to Spain in January.
