Violent wind storms wreaked havoc in southern Poland overnight, toppling trees, damaging cars and ripping off roofs in the historic southern city of Krakow and the nearby Tatra mountain foothills, Polish media reported.

No fatalities were reported, however, the death toll from a freak storm which battered Poland's north-east Mazurian Lakes district Tuesday rose to four Friday, the commercial TVN24 news channel reported.

Several other pleasure boaters remained missing Friday after hurricane-force winds capsized dozens of yachts in the popular tourist area Tuesday evening.

The violent storm, likened by some to a tornado, appeared without warning, witnesses say.
