Delegates at an international suicide prevention conference in Ireland have heard that children as young as six have tried to commit suicide, Irish national broadcaster RTE reported Wednesday.
The study's authors said it was "unexpected" that such a young child would try to commit suicide as it is usually in the teens that such behaviour starts.
The study of 439 children who were treated at two Dublin hospitals for attempted suicide between 1994 and 2006 found that 10 per cent of them were under 11 and the youngest was 6 years old, the World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention in the south-western town of Killarney was told.
The study found that most had overdosed, usually on paracetamol, more than half wanted to die and a third had attempted suicide before, RTE reported.
