Syria denied on Tuesday any connection with the Fatah al-Islam organization which was clashing with Lebanese forces in a Palestinian refugee camp in the country's north.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem made the denial at a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart Massimo D'Alema at the end of his two-day official visit here.
"Syria has no relation to this organization and the Syrian security forces confronted its militants when they were trying to cross borders from Iraq," Muallem told the reporters.
"Fatah al-Islam militants are wanted in Syria and a number of this organization's members are detained in the Syrian prisons," the minister added.
Muallem stressed that Fatah al-Islam organization has nothing to do with the Palestinian issue and it harms the Palestinian issue on the contrary.
"I'm optimistic about the possibility of cooperation between Syria and Italy to find a solution to the problems occurring in Lebanon, and help Lebanon avoid terrorism which harms its security and stability," D'Alema said.
