Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has won a new seven-year mandate after winning more than 97 percent of the vote in a referendum, the interior minister announced on Tuesday.
It said Assad, 41, collected a massive 97.62 percent of the vote in Sunday's referendum.
Voters were asked whether they "approve the candidacy of Dr Bashar al-Assad for the post of president of the republic." About 12 million Syrians were eligible to vote.
In July 2000, he was the sole candidate to succeed his father Hafez who had died the previous month. The official result then showed that Bashar received 97.29 percent of voter support.
