Afghan officials say Taliban fighters have reclaimed about half of a strategic area they were driven from by U.S. and NATO forces in 2006.

The officials say Taliban fighters have been carrying out guerrilla attacks in the Panjwai and Zhare districts southwest of Kandahar and have swept through isolated police posts, The New York Times reported Sunday.

Hundreds of Taliban fighters were driven from the area last year, but began moving back in after NATO troops partly withdrew in July.
