Tear gas, arrests in 4th night of Greek riots after migrant's death
Police responded with tear gas when demonstrators threw stones and set fire to trash containers in the fourth night in a row of protests in the northern Greek port of Thessaloniki after the death of a Nigerian immigrant.

About 200 demonstrators were involved in the clashes overnight, and 21 of them were arrested, but by Wednesday morning, the situation had quieted down, state NET television reported.

Nigerians and mainly young demonstrators have carried out protests since Saturday night at the site of the Nigerian's death.

According to police, the immigrant who was selling pirated CDs leaped from the first floor of a cafeteria to escape a police inspection and suffered fatal injuries, dying at the scene.

But immigrants told reporters that migrants are systematically mistreated by Thessaloniki's police and the victim had been beaten by police a few days before his death.

An investigation into his death has been ordered.

Official statistics showed that 10 per cent of Greece's population, or 1 million people, are immigrants and about 300,000 of them are undocumented.
