Thailand aims at 590-billion-dollar halal food market

Thailand will stage its first-ever halal exhibition in Bangkok later this year, in the hope getting a bigger bite out of the world's 590-billion-dollar halal and kosher market, industry sources said Tuesday.

The "World of Muslim 2007" show is scheduled on September 7 to 9 at Bangkok's Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre, with more than 200 booths displaying Thai-made halal products and services.

"The exhibition will feature not only halal food but also halal services, for example, how to provide services for Muslims in hotels, hospitals and airlines," said Winai Dahlan, director of the Business for Halal Products Centre, a co-host of the exhibition along with the government-run Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau.

According to Winai, Thailand exports of halal-label food items amounted to 330 million dollars last year, less than 0.05 per cent of global halal demand which is estimated at a whopping 590 billion dollars per annum.

Thailand, which ranks as the world's 12th-largest food exporter, has huge potential to increase its share in the halal market if Thai exporters become more knowledgeable about halal labelling requirements and processing, said Winai.

"At the moment we are the main exporter of halal food products out of south-east Asia, but I don't know if we can keep our position what with the Philippines and even Vietnam coming up," said Winai.
