Time magazine loses suit against Suharto
The Supreme Court ordered Time magazine to pay $106 million in damages for defaming former Indonesian dictator Suharto by alleging his family amassed $15 billion dollars during his 32-year rule, a court spokesman said Monday.

The cover story in the magazine's May 1999 Asian edition said much of the money was transferred from Switzerland to Austria before Suharto stepped down amid riots and pro-democracy protests in 1998.

Suharto maintained the article defamed him as well as the state of Indonesia.

A three-judge Supreme Court panel ruled on Aug. 31 "that Time magazine has to pay $106 million for defaming Suharto," said Nurhadi, who goes by only one name.
