Turkcell, the only GSM operator bidding for license of the Third Generation Mobile Communication System (3G), which will provide cell phone users with a number of new opportunities, got the License A by offering 321 million euro.
During the tender held at the Telecommunication Authority in Ankara, Turkcell offered 311 million euro to get the License A.
Upon demand of the tender commission, Turkcell raised its bid by 10 million euro to 321 million euro.
This amount will rise to 510 million USD after the VAT is added. Since there was no other bids in the tender, the tenders for the licenses B, C and D were cancelled.
"3G" is the third generation of mobile phone standards and technology, after "2G".
It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the International Mobile Telecommunications program, "IMT-2000".
3G technologies enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.
Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment.
3G networks are wide area cellular telephone networks which evolved to incorporate high-speed internet access and video telephony.
