Turkey announces Gaza aid pledge

Speaking at the donors' conference as "Conference in Support of the Palestinian Economy for the Reconstruction of Gaza" in Egypt, Babacan reminded that Turkey, so far, collected 43 million USD assistance for Gaza through state and private institutions.

He said, "recently, we have witnessed a big humanity tragedy in Gaza. Border gates should be opened and the siege should be ended. It is time to heal the wounds."

Babacan noted that Turkey supported Egypt's "contributions" for peace and stability in the region.

He said that a peace process --which was based on "two states living side by side and recognizing the presence of each other within the scope of resolutions of UN Security Council"-- should be put into practice again to solve Palestinian problem.

"Consensus among Palestinian groups is a priority. We call Palestinian groups to end disagreements among themselves. We support the consensus which was settled among them last week," said Babacan.

Following the conference, Babacan is expected to hold several bilateral meetings and then return to Turkey in the evening.
