Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said Tuesday the situation in Gaza was a tragedy for humanity and Israel must stop its military operations immediately.
Babacan delivered a speech at a meeting of the UN Security Council which convened on the situation in Gaza.
Escalation of violence in Gaza drew the region away from the peace and Turkey was deeply saddened over killing of civilians there, Babacan said.
The people in Gaza needed food and medical equipment and thousands of people were left homeless, he said. "We cannot allow this situation to continue," he said.
All parties should act responsibly, Babacan said.
"Turkey continues its active diplomatic efforts to help peace, stability and security to come to Middle East," he said.
Babacan said Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Saudi Arabia and held talks with several authorities.
"We believe that Israel must halt its military operations as quickly as possible and an agreement should be reached on a sustainable cease-fire," he said.
Babacan said Palestinian people should also have unity which was needed for a peaceful and prosperous future and only an effective dialogue would lead to a comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
International community should take action immediately regarding the matter, he said.
Turkey would keep working for a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region, Babacan added.
