Turkey condemns Israeli attack on West Bank mosque

Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday expressed deep concer over an attack staged by a group of radical settlers in the northern West Bank, Anadolu news agency reported.

Releasing a statement, the ministry condemned the attack on a holy place of Islam and called on Israel to take necessary measures to prevent repetition of such attacks which might further escalate tension.

The ministry also wanted the perpetrators to be brought before court soon.

Extremist Jewish settlers attacked the mosque, burning holy books and spraying threatening graffiti in Hebrew on the building.

A group of extreme Jewish settlers set into fire Al-Kabir mosque in Yasuf village near Salfit village on December 11.

Abdulrahim Musle, mayor of Yasuf village, said the settlers broke down the door of the mosque and set the second floor into fire. He said Koran and carpets in the mosque burned.

OIC also on Sunday denounced the attack in the occupied West Bank.

Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) secretary-general Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said the profanation of the mosque, the torching of Quran copies found in it and the spraying of racist graffiti against Islam and Muslims, represented a blatant aggression against the sanctity of sacred places.
