Turkey expected to do more public offerings in 2010

Turkey is expected to increase number of public offerings in 2010.

According to the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) data, Turkey held only one public offering in 2009 worth of 6 million USD while Korea held 69 public offerings worth of 2.6 billion USD and companies in Poland held 36 public offerings for their shares worth of 2.2 billion USD. Meanwhile, public offerings amounted to 11 billion USD in Brazil.

Currently, there are 315 companies trading in the IMKB. Turkey is ranked 16th among the emerging markets in regard to the number of trading companies.

Among the emerging markets, India's Bombay Stock Exchange is ranked first with 5 thousand companies. It is followed by National Stock Exchange of India with 1,500 companies and Malaysian Stock Exchange with nearly a thousand companies.

Turkey's Capital Markets Board is planning to amend the relevant regulation to facilitate the process of public offering. The amendment is expected to be finalized soon.

Turkey held 35 public offerings in 1990, 29 in 1995, 35 in 2000, 9 in 2005 and one in 2009.

Meanwhile, under efforts to enable companies to utilize the capabilities offered by the capital market in a much effective and broader fashion, IMKB will host "Initial Public Offering Summit" in Istanbul on May 6-7, 2010. IMKB aims at increasing number of trading companies up to a thousand in 2023.
