Foreign Minister Ali Babacan is going to Portugal today to attend a meeting of the European Union that is expected to focus on ways to revive the stalled Middle East peace process in time for a US-sponsored international conference.

The visit will be Babacan's first overseas trip as foreign minister. He replaced Abdullah Gül after Gül was elected president last week. The meeting will be an informal "Gymnich-type" gathering in Viana do Castelo, a coastal city in northern Portugal, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday. "These meetings provide the opportunity for Turkey, an important actor in its region, to convey its views and positions to the EU member states on regional and international issues," it added.

Babacan will attend a working lunch that brings together foreign ministers of the 27-member countries as well as the candidate nations. The ministers will discuss how the EU can help build on recent talks between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
